Why You Should Always Ask "So What?"

So what? That question should be asked every time we are taught the New Covenant. But first, we need to know the basics of the New Covenant. Jeremiah 31:33‐34 tells us that it holds us up by three pillars. 33 “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,”  declares the Lord, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” 

1. Pillar One – God gave us a new identity. Years ago, a lady told me she was praying God would write His law on her heart. He had already answered her prayer the day she was saved. But what does that mean? The Law is based on the character of God, meaning He has placed His character in our new heart in Christ. So what? We are not defined by our past, parents,  possessions or peer. God alone defines us as holy, righteous, blameless, loving and more. It’s  who we are in the deepest core of our being.

2. Pillar Two – God united Himself to us. The word “know” in verse 34 is the same Hebrew word  used in Genesis 4:1 where Adam and Eve’s amazing intimacy of their physical union is written about. Similarly, God united Himself to us spiritually. So what? He wants to enjoy us and for us to enjoy Him as He loves us from the inside and lives through us the very life of Christ.

3. Pillar Three – God forgave us completely. God forgave us so thoroughly that it not only includes our past but our future, too. Not remembering our sins any more means He doesn’t hold them against us even when we do sin. So what? We never need to feel compelled to “run away” from our Father when we sin. We can run to Him and be honest about what we have done and confident we are forgiven. And then ask Jesus to live through us in us to overcome the next time (That’s repentance.)

Obssessive Christianity Disorder

In his book, The Naked Gospel, my friend, Andrew Farley, writes about a debilitating disorder that is spreading among many Christians.  It's called by the same title as the first chapter of his book, Obsessive Christianity Disorder.  Let me share a few excerpts from that chapter.

MEDS, THERAPY, AND A MENTAL HEALTH FACILITY - THESE WERE the solutions I was offered. One counselor suggested that my condition wouldn't change for the rest of my life and that I'd always need medication.  As desperate as I was, I just didn't buy it. There had to be some other answer to my problem.  After trying several Christian therapists, each of whom employed a different approach, no one could alter the patterned behaviors I was stuck in.

After all, obsessive Bible study and street evangelism are not your run-of-the-mill symptoms. (p 19)

Soon all of the exertion with no payoff took its toll. I began spiraling into a deep depression.  A few months later, I found myself lying on the floor of my apartment, sobbing for hours on end: "God, I'm doing everything I'm supposed to do, and I still don't feel any closer to you. In fact, I feel worse than ever!  How could this have gone so wrong? I can't see any way out.  Help me!"  (p 22) 

It's been seventeen years since I lay sobbing on the floor of that apartment. Today, I wouldn't trade my relationship with God for anything. In fact, I would wish my relationship with him on everyone! Through my desperation, my surrender to God for real answers, and my willingness to leave behind everything I had presumed before, I was introduced to the "naked" gospel. (p 23)

Maybe you can relate though your story may have different details.  It's a story we hear every week at Grace Life International. Christians living in a state of "have to Christianity" instead of "want to Christianity."  And the solution is that same "naked gospel" with no man-made additives.   We share this to help other Christians experience the internal rest God always wanted us to have from the start.  After all, we are human beings, not human doings!

Do You See Life in Monochrome or in Color?

Have you seen the video of the guy with colorblindness who receives a life changing birthday gift from his parents?  It is a pair of EnChroma Colorblindness Glasses invented by glass scientist Don McPherson.  He created them to help surgeons distinguish tissues and for eye protection against lasers.  Later, he accidentally discovered they gave people with colorblindness the ability to see life in color.

In the video, the moment the man places the glasses over his colorblind eyes, he immediately struggles to find the words to describe what he is seeing for the first time in his life (except for a few choice expletives which you can overlook).  Then this big tough guy starts shaking and crying at the joy and wonder of it all.  His life has just been changed forever.

We see this same response at GLI when we share in our counseling and teaching that God has provided new spiritual glasses called the New Covenant.  Many of them also see life in color for the first time.  When they do, they may cry, shake, laugh, shake their heads, and more.

Sadly, the majority of Christians have never experienced the joy of living from the New Covenant Gospel.  So, unfortunately they only see their Christianity in monochrome which they think is normal. That’s because most of their Christian friends do too.  This leaves their view of God, themselves, others, and how life works dim at best and very dark at worst.

Want to put on your New Covenant Glasses?  Here they are:

 1.  You have Jesus in you, not just on His throne in heaven.

However, you need a revelation from God so you can go beyond this fact of Him in you, to living by faith in Christ in you.  See Ephesians 3:14-21.  You are wearing these glasses if you enjoy fellowship with Christ in you and are asking Him to live His life through you?

2.  You are under grace, not the 10 Commandments.

When you wear these glasses, you realize you have two things which are much better.  You have Jesus in you to live through you in the power of the Spirit. (Romans 7:4)  And, you have the law written on your heart, i.e. you have a perfect identity in Christ according to Hebrews 10:16-17. 

3.  You are a saint, not a sinner.

       When you wear these glasses, though you sin, you still see yourself as a saint, not a sinner.  Romans 5:19 makes this incredibly easy to see in full color. 

4.  You are already forgiven for all sins, not forgiven one by one. 

       When you wear these glasses, you understand you are already forgiven before you ever sin according to Colossians 2:13 and Ephesians 1:7. 

5.  God accepts you unconditionally, not just because He is kind. 
        

       Wearing these glasses helps you see that God has placed His righteousness in your identity in Christ.  This has made you unconditionally acceptable to God. You can’t mess it up! See 2 Corinthians 5:17&21.

10 Gifts God Gives for Personal Happiness

The mere mention of the song "Happiness is the Truth" by Pharrell Williams should immediately cause you to break out singing this wildly popular hit song.  It's been featured in the movie Despicable Me 2, commercials, singing competitions, news shows, and more.  I also think one of the reasons it was No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 list for 10 consecutive weeks was that it touched a desire God placed in every human soul: the desire to be happy.

Yet, you have probably been taught as a Christ-follower that happiness and joy aren't the same.   If you mean happiness based on the "happenings" of life, then that is true.  However, when considered in Biblical context, I'm not sure they are different.  You may have also been taught you are not supposed to focus on being happy but on being holy.  Yet, the more I understand the New Covenant, the more I'm convinced these aren't mutually exclusive.  Why?  In one sense, holiness is simply living life the way God intended.  It would seem then that the more you do that, the happier you will be.  Of course, many have their own ideas of what makes them happy that are far from God's ideas.  Let's see if we can discover together in the story of creation what God originally provided for your happiness.  

1. Himself:  When God breathed into Adam, He breathed Himself into him.  His intent in creating each of us has always been to be intimate with us by living inside of us so He could love us and show us how wonderful He is.  He also intended to live through us to reveal Himself to others.   Genesis 2:7 describes this and is similar to Jesus breathing on the disciples in John 20:22. 
2.  Identity:  When God created Adam, Genesis 1:27 says, He created him in his own image.  This means you were created with a God-centered identity.  Though Adam's identity was stolen in Genesis 3, Jesus came to give it back to all who believe in Him.  2 Corinthians 5:17
3. Forgiveness:  After Adam and Even sinned, God came looking for them.  Afterwards, He banished them from the Garden but before He did, He killed animals and covered them with their skins for clothing.  This was the first sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins and was pointing to the ultimate sacrifice, Jesus Christ's death on the cross, which would provide past, present and future forgiveness to all who believe.  Genesis 3:21, Colossians 2:13, Hebrews 10:17-18
4. Companionship:  When God said, "It is not good for man to be alone", He formed a wife for Adam from his rib.  However, this speaks of a truth larger than just marriage. You were made to be in satisfying relationship with a group of people starting with your spouse(unless God has called you to be single).  Married or single, you were made to enjoy human connection on a deep level.  Genesis 2:18-25
5. Children:  God intended for most of us to have children so He could have others to live in and through.  In a fallen world, some have experienced anything but happiness in raising their children.  Yet, God originally intended for them to be a blessing.  Also, even those who don't have children may often enjoy their family or friend's children.  Genesis 1:28; Psalm 127:3
6. Animals: God gave us animals to take care of and to enjoy.  If you've ever owned a dog or cat, you know how special they can be to you.  You also know how much sorrow you feel when they die.  Maybe that is why there will be animals in the new heaven and earth that we are going to inhabit.  Genesis 2:19-20.  Isaiah 11:6-9
7. Creation:  God gave Adam a beautiful earth and breathtaking stars to gaze upon.  Why do you enjoy fall leaves, geological formations, mountains, the ocean, a river, a sunset and the stars?  It's because God gave those to us to enjoy and to see Him reflected in it.  That may be why many people feel close to God when they are in nature.   Genesis 1:1-19
8. Work:  God gave Adam a specific job to do - to cultivate and keep the garden.  Genesis 2:15.  According to Ephesians 2:10, you were uniquely designed by God to do specific jobs which include good works in your time on this earth.  Do you know what you are designed to do?  If not, find out for a very small fee at www.placeministries.org.  It will help you understand why you keep being drawn to certain activities.
9. Food:  God created a smorgasbord of tasty nutritious food.  Adam and Eve were given carte blanche permission from God to eat any of the hundreds of fruit and vegetables in the garden any time they wanted (except for one).  When the majority of the food we eat is a variety of God-made food rather than man-made food, we will typically feel a lot better physically and emotionally.  Genesis 1:29; 2:16-17.
10. Land/Home:  In Genesis 2:8, we are told, "The Lord God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed."   The desire to have your own home whether a house, condo, cabin, apartment or tent, is not rooted in the American dream.  It comes from God.  So much so, that the Scriptures speak of God having a home for you in God's house after you die.  John 14:2-3

As you just read about all God gave to provide for your happiness, are you enjoying them?

Here are a few other comments as I conclude.  Did you notice that this is a God-centered happiness instead of a man-centered happiness?  Unless you are enjoying 1 - 3 in light of the New Covenant, the remainder will provide only fleeting happiness.  On the other hand, if 1 - 3 are in place, you can enjoy the others more than you could ever imagine.  You can enjoy God-centered happiness without having all of 4-10 such as children or animals.  The world, your flesh and the devil have the goal of twisting all 10 of these to make you miserable.

Are You a Minister of the Old or New Covenant?

For most of the first 10 years I was a pastor, I was a mixed up minister who mixed up a lot of Christians by preaching a mixture of the Old Covenant (OC) and New Covenant (NC).  By doing this, I unwittingly watered down both the purpose of the (OC) and the power of the (NC).  

It was my own preaching like this that eventually brought me to brokenness.  That would be a great title for a book, wouldn’t it?  “Pastor’s Own Preaching Breaks Him”!  In that brokenness, God began to give me understanding about the liberating difference in the two Covenants.   I didn’t know at the time that this was not only going to free me but many others in the years to come.

Let’s look at according to 2 Corinthians 3:5-11 and then check ourselves to which one we are telling people.

5 Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God, 6 who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 7 But if the ministry of death, in letters engraved on stones, came [c]with glory, so that the sons of Israel could not look intently at the face of Moses because of the glory of his face, fading as it was, 8 how will the ministry of the Spirit fail to be even more with glory? 9 For if the ministry of condemnation has glory, much more does the ministry of righteousness abound in glory. 10 For indeed what had glory, in this case has no glory because of the glory that surpasses it. 11 For if that which fades away was with glory, much more that which remains is in glory.

The ministry of the (OC) is a ministry of death.  The purpose of the (OC) or law is to show an unbeliever how sinful they are.  They are sinful because their old nature is spiritually dead.  See Romans 3:19-20; Romans 5:20; Galatians 5:23; Ephesians 2:1-3

The ministry of the (NC) is a ministry of the Spirit. The law cannot give life but the gift of the Holy Spirit causes a person to come alive spiritually under the (NC).  Forgiveness is great but dead people need life!  Galatians 3:21; Romans 8:2

The ministry of the (OC) is a ministry of condemnation.   The ministry of the (OC) is to reveal to an unbeliever that because of their sins, they are condemned and therefore unacceptable to God.  Romans 3:19-20; 5:20; Galatians 3:21

The ministry of the (NC) is a ministry of righteousness.  The ministry of the (NC) reveals to Christians that they are 100% acceptable to God because they are the righteousness of God in Christ. Romans 5:1, 17, 19; 2 Corinthians 5:21

The ministry of the (OC) has come to an end.  Once a person comes to faith in Christ, their relationship with the (OC), meaning the law, ends and is replaced by the (NC).  Romans 7:1-7; Galatians 3:19, 25

The ministry of the (NC) is permanent.  As Christians, our identity in Christ and Christ in us has permanently replaced the (OC).  Ephesians 1:13-14; Hebrews 10:16-17

If you are discovering that you are like I once was, in that you mix together the two Covenants, let go of the Old Covenant unless you are talking to an unbeliever.  It’s not for Christians!  Embrace and live in the freedom of being a New Covenant person!  Minister to people this awesome New Covenant which God has provided for us in Christ!

How the New Covenant Trumps the Old Covenant

Many years ago, when on the staff of a large church, I was caught off guard one day in the work room by the Church Receptionist.  She quizzed me about my relationship with Ellen Taylor, a well-known girl in the church.  We were secretly dating because I was the Youth Minister. So, we were trying to keep it under wraps.  Though I tried to to play it off, the Receptionist realized something was up because she said, "You talk about her differently than anyone else".

I'm so glad God forgave me for lying that day because though  I denied we were dating, I was caught!  Yet, my entire demeanor changed when I spoke of her.  I just could not hide the love and joy I felt when I talked about Ellen Taylor, compared to other people.  My face lit up every time I spoke about her. 

When you and I talk about Jesus and the New Covenant, people may very well notice that we light up too.  Why? Because through The New Covenant, He transforms us so much more than the Old Covenant every could!  I think you will appreciate more of what I mean as we compare the two. 

    

Old Covenant  (Also referred to as the  Mosaic or Law Covenant)	New Covenant  (Also referred to as the  Grace Covenant)
God related to Israel as their King , Father and Husband  1 Samuel 8:7; Deuteronomy 32:6, Jeremiah 31:31-32 Binding Vows:  God promised that He would do His part as long as Israel did their part. Deuteronomy 28	God relates to you as your King, Father and Husband.  1Timothy 1:17; Romans 8:15; Ephesians 5: 21-22  Binding Vows:  God has promised that He would do His part and your part.  He continues to do your  part as you rely on Jesus to live in and through you. Jeremiah 31:31-34, Galatians 2:20
Responsibilities:  The 10 Commandments were written by God on tablets of stone.  Exodus 22	Responsibilities:  God wrote His law on your heart. This gave you your identity in Christ.  Hebrews 10:16
Blessings:    ...Were given by God based  on one condition - their obedience.  Deuteronomy 28 (1/5 of the chapter is blessings; 4/5 is curses.)   ...God was in the Tabernacle  and later the Temple.  Each Jew  could get close to God only once  a year, Yom Kippur, when he or  she was represented by the High Priest in the Holy of Holies.  Exodus 40:34-35; Leviticus 16 ...God lived near Israel in the  Holy of Holies.  Leviticus 16:2 ...God gave temporary  forgiveness based on their  most recent sacrifice.  Leviticus	Blessings:  ...God blessed you with all your blessings in Christ the moment you believed.  The only condition is faith in Christ.  Ephesians 1:3, 2:7-8  (No curses under The New Covenant!) ...God is in you and you can't get any closer to God than that!  Galatians 2:20 ...God lives very much at home in your spirit, the new Holy of Holies.  1Corinthians 6:17 and 19.  ...God gave you eternal forgiveness for your past, present and future sins, based on Jesus' sacrifice.  Colossians 2:13
The Cutting of the Covenant: The sacrificial system was the continuous  "cutting of the covenant".  It was also a constant reminder of their sins. Hebrews 9:18-20	The Cutting of the Covenant:   This covenant was "cut" by the death of Jesus Christ that you "walked into" with God.  Romans 6:3-6; Galatians 2:20
The Covenant Meal:  The Passover Exodus 12	The Covenant Meal:  The Lord's Supper. (Some know it as Communion or the Eucharist). Matthew 26:27
The Sign of the Covenant:  Circumcision for men only (the ladies said,"Hallelujah") which covered their  entire family. Leviticus 12:2-3	The Sign of the Covenant:  Baptism for each individual including men as well as women.  Acts 10

  

Are you beginning to understand how much better the New Covenant is compared to the Old Covenant?  "Thank you God for Your New Covenant that You have so richly provided for us in Christ!  What good news!"  

"But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises."  Hebrew 6:6 NIV

Much Better! The New Covenant

Recently, I had the great joy of marrying a special young couple for whom I had provided pre-marital counseling.  It was cool to observe them stare into each other's eyes with that "I love you but I hope I don't pass out" look as they repeated their vows.  As they did, it reminded me that wedding vows are the closet thing we have to a covenant in our culture today.  Christ followers have entered into what Jesus called the New Covenant by very few know what this means.  This void has made us vulnerable to being ambushed by religion and the pain of the flesh.  We see them every week at Grace Life International. A covenant is an agreement between two parties pledging their commitment and responsibilities to each other.  It is binding until one of them dies.   In ancient times, it might be between a king who set up a covenant with the people he had conquered.  The people may not have been given the choice of agreeing.  This was a very authoritative, legal covenant. Another version was much more relational.  In the Old Covenant, God gave Himself to Israel as their authoritative King and their loving Husband.  Key Elements of A Covenant 1. Binding vows.  2. Responsibilities and blessings.   Each had responsibilities for the other which would result in blessings for both.  For example, you and I might commit to be responsible for helping each other if one was attacked.  The blessing would be that we would both have twice the defense for defeating an enemy.   3. The Cutting of the Covenant.   The two parties would walk in a figure eight around animals sacrificed and cut in half in two piles. Now the covenant was sealed in blood until someone died.  The sacrificed animals were also a warning of what would befall someone who broke the covenant!
4. The Covenant Meal.  Both the enjoyed a meal together, eating the cooked animals showing they had internalized the covenant in the very fabric of their being.  5. A sign of the covenant.  There was always a sign covenant as a constant reminder of the relationship.  For example, my wedding ring constantly reminds me of my marriage covenant with my wife.
 Did you know that the Old and New Covenants have all five elements (which I will share next week)?  Did you also know that when Jesus died as one of the parties of the Old Covenant, it ended and the New Covenant was inaugurated?  Read Hebrews 9:16-17.
 "Like a will that takes effect when someone dies, the new covenant was put into action at Jesus’ death. His death marked the transition from the old plan to the new one, canceling the old obligations and accompanying sins, and summoning the heirs to receive the eternal inheritance that was promised them. He brought together God and his people in this new way." I am excited for the deeper intimacy, freedom, and fruitfulness in Christ that await you as God unfolds the New Covenant for you during the next few weeks.
